The White Horse Theatre’s "The Great Gatsby" live on stage at Mildred-Harnack-Schule!
A mysterious, emotional and timeless play – "The Great Gatsby"
It was Friday, the 17th of October, just one day before the start of the autumn break, when the pupils and teachers of the Mildred-Harnack-Schule gathered in the auditorium for a very special occasion waiting behind the theatre drapes – and what a wonderful occasion it was!
The renowned White Horse Theatre, Europe’s biggest touring theatre, set their sights on Germany for their 2025/2026 touring season, and as luck would have it, they have decided to cooperate with our school to organise a play of the theatre adaptation of one of the Great American Novels – “The Great Gatsby”.
For those unfamiliar, “The Great Gatsby” is a tragic novel, authored by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and first published in 1925, during the roaring twenties during which the novel takes place. The narrative follows the perspective of Nick Carraway, a young man who recently moved to Long Island, near New York City, for work and lives near the mansion of the mysterious and dubious millionaire Jay Gatsby, whose life is tormented by his unending obsession with his former lover Daisy Buchanan.
The introduction began with a brief but exiting overview of the play’s plot by Mr. Überschaer, setting the mood of what was to come. By that time, all spectators were already eager for the performance – until finally, the four actors, who each played two roles, emerged from backstage, and commenced the eighty minute play.
During the play the actors and the crew showed off their astounding skills of acting and theatrical techniques. The subtle jazz music that was played during some scenes perfectly recreated the atmosphere of the Jazz Age during the 1920s, while other brief sound effects augmented the effect of certain scenes and actions that were crucial to the plot, keeping the viewer engaged. Also, the acting performance was simply amazing, with actors showing their passion and emotion perfectly to set the scene’s tone..
After the performance the actors invited the audience to ask questions about the play, their life as an actor or anything else they were curious about. Alongside simple but interesting questions – such as which roles the actors liked to play the least – there were also quite thoughtful and profound questions about the ways the play portrays social class inequality, how acting can affect ones personality and what relevance the story hold to this day.
Personally, my highlight of the play was its authenticity. The way the American accent was mimicked perfectly, to the point where I was genuinely surprised when the actors began speaking in a British/Irish accent after the play ended, just goes to show how talented the actors are. Also, the way the jazz music was incorporated into the play and the seamless transitions between roles performed by the actors made the play seem incredibly genuine and made the viewer feel immersed in the place and time of the play as a real bystander. For a moment one could almost forget he was in a school auditorium.
Overall, the performance by the White Horse Theatre was a unique and memorable experience for every audience member and especially for enthusiasts of theatre and the English language! It was a great enrichment for English lessons as well as for each viewer’s understanding of English and American culture.
Am Freitag, dem 17. Oktober, waren alle Lehrer und Schüler der Mildred-Harnack-Schule erfüllt von gespannter Erwartung. Der zwölfte Jahrgang sowie die Englisch-Leistungskurse des dreizehnten Jahrgangs versammelten sich vor der Schulaula – denn hinter den Vorhängen der Theaterbühne ließ etwas Besonderes auf sich warten…
Das renommierte „White Horse Theatre“, Europas größtes englischsprachiges Tourneetheater, hat für die 2025/2026 Saison seine Reiseziele auf Deutschland ausgerichtet – und, zum Glück aller Lehrer und Schüler der MHS, besuchte die Schauspielergruppe auch unsere Schule, um die Theateradaption des Roman-Klassikers „The Great Gatsby“ aufzuführen.
Das Stück basiert auf dem weltberühmten gleichnamigen Roman des US-amerikanischen Autors Francis Scott Fitzgerald, der erstmals im Jahr 1925 veröffentlicht wurde. Es entführt das Publikum nach Long Island, unweit von New York City, in die „Jazz Age“ der glamourösen, aber gleichzeitig tragischen Goldenen Zwanziger. Die Erzählung verfolgt, aus der Perspektive von Nick Carraway, die geheimnisvolle Welt seines neuen Nachbarn Jay Gatsby – ein mysteriöser und dubioser Millionär, dessen Leben von der Sehnsucht nach seiner einstigen Liebhaberin Daisy Buchanan geprägt ist.
Nach einer kurzen, aber spannenden Einleitung von Herrn Überschaer zum Ablauf und einer Synopse des Stücks waren bereits alle Anwesenden in der Aula still und aufmerksam und warteten gespannt – bis dann, kurz darauf, die vier Schauspieler auf die präparierte Bühne traten, ihre Rollen vorstellten und das 80-minütige Theaterstück begann.
Im Verlauf des Stücks haben die Schauspieler und das technische Team auch ihre ganze Professionalität gezeigt. Es wurde zeittypische Jazzmusik gespielt, um der Atmosphäre der „Jazz Age“ gerecht zu werden, Toneffekte hoben wichtige Momente im Stück hervor und besonders das emotionale und leidenschaftliche Schauspiel unterhielt und beeindruckte das gesamte Publikum sichtlich.
Anschließend luden die Schauspieler die Zuschauer ein, Fragen zum Stück, zum Leben als Schauspieler oder Ähnlichem zu stellen. Dabei kam es neben simplen, aber interessanten Fragen, etwa, welche Rolle den Schauspielern am wenigsten gefallen hat, auch zu besonders nachdenklichen und tiefgründigen Fragen über den Einfluss des Schauspiels auf die eigene Persönlichkeit, die Darstellung von Ungleichheiten zwischen Sozialklassen innerhalb des Stücks und welche Bedeutung die Handlung des Stücks bzw. des Romans heute noch trägt.
Persönlich fand ich am Stück die Authentizität besonders hervorragend. Der US-amerikanische Akzent der britischen bzw. irischen Schauspieler war extrem gut nachgeahmt und hat, in Kombination mit der Jazzmusik, die Atmosphäre so authentisch und zeitgerecht gestaltet, dass der Zuschauer die positive Täuschung hatte, den Sachverhalt wahrlich mitzuerleben, was ebenfalls durch die Bravour der Schauspieler und deren fließende Übergänge beim Rollenwechsel umso mehr verstärkt wurde. Man hätte fast vergessen können, dass man sich in einer Schulaula befand.
Insgesamt war der Auftritt des „White Horse Theatre“ ein besonderes und einmaliges Erlebnis für jeden Zuschauer, insbesondere für Theater- und Kulturinteressierte! Eine große Bereicherung für den Englischunterricht sowie für das Verständnis der englischsprachigen Kultur jedes Zuschauers.
